Overview
2024 has been a tremendous year for Creative Growth as the organization celebrates its 50th anniversary—a major museum exhibition (SFMOMA), multiple art fairs and fashion collabs, several international art shows, TWO Beyond Trend fashion shows.
The Oakland-based nonprofit, which provides gallery and studio space for artists with disabilities, has become an invaluable part of the arts, disability, and Oakland communities. Creative Growth holds a special place in my heart, as I grew up with Lauren Dare and my cousin Anthony Eng was a Creative Growth artist for many years.
Founded in 1974 by psychologist Dr. Elias Katz and his wife, artist Florence Ludins-Katz, Creative Growth has since expanded to include sister organizations, NIAD (Richmond) and Creativity Explored (San Francisco).
Creative Growth at 50: A Visual History (1974–2024) is “a visual journey through five decades of fostering artistic expression, inclusivity, and community. Curated by Director Emeritus Tom di Maria, this exhibition highlights the evolution of the center by showcasing works from our historic artists.”
This FANTASTIC show, beautifully curated by Tom, features 80+ pieces of affordable artwork by Creative Growth artists with additional budget-friendly items like skateboard decks, posters, and tote bags.
