Overview
Micki Meng and Larry Ossei-Mensa’s latest show, organized by PJ Policarpio, Cross Currents features artists: Alvin Armstrong, April Bey, Eunnam Hong, Gabriel Mills, Gisela McDaniel, Li Wang, Rozeal, Sahana Ramakrishnan, Tajh Rust, and Tidawhitney Lek.
Cross Currents celebrates “the profound influence and dynamic relationship between communities of Black and Asian heritage in shaping contemporary culture…The exhibition explores the symbiosis between these communities to discover the shared values, intersections, and influences in addition to solidarity within the rich contours of these two vibrant cultural groups. Embedded within the fabric of Black and Asian cultures are deep-rooted spiritual connections to ancestry, memory, storytelling, and the natural environment. Through multiple crossings and migrations across oceans, continents, and cities, the Black and Asian diaspora have cultivated a unique sense of in-betweenness, hybridity, and biculturality.”
📚 *The exhibition, in collaboration with the San Francisco Public Library and the LINE hotel, includes a selection of free books from the show’s curated booklist, as well as SF Library card sign-ups from January 16–February 16. The Cross Currents free booklist pop-up can be found at the LINE hotel as well.
The elegance of the human spirit connects the works in his show. Honor comes to mind when I think about how this one made me feel—sunshine, books, and love.
🗓 Cross Currents runs until February 16, 2024 at Four One Nine.
