Overview
Today’s LOVE LETTER TO ART features Jonathan Carver Moore’s latest show, Infinite, by San Francisco lens-based artist, Victoria Mara Heilweil.
Infinite’s 15 works reflect Heilweil’s emotional response to sending her transgender son, struggling with mental health issues, to a therapeutic boarding school.
Preview of Victoria Mara Heilweil: Infinite. Jonathan Carver Moore, San Francisco.
“Infinite is a contemplation of water as both a symbolic emotional state and a physical element. The imagery places greater emphasis on visual sensation than realistic depiction, creating an embodied response to the water. Removing the horizon line amplifies the infinite space, forming an expanse that plays with our sense of the micro and macro, challenging us to reflect on our relationship with the presence or absence of boundaries.
Like water, mothering has fluid edges with no end—it is infinite. It is not something you can plan for, you can only embrace the moment. Two years ago Heilweil and her husband made the difficult decision to send their teenager away to a therapeutic boarding school. He had been struggling with mental health issues that made it impossible to keep him safe in their home. Heilweil vacillated between hope and despair, courage and fear, fortitude and immobilization. For all the challenges, this experience taught her the power of change, and shaped her into a more empathetic and flexible individual. Heilweil’s transgender son’s strength to endure hardship in his journey is an inspiration to her.”

The show also includes a take-home poster inspired by the ‘paper stacks’ series of the late conceptual artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres.
Infinite delicately combines photography and video, serving as a beautiful reminder that if we remain still yet fluid like water, life will flow as it’s meant to be.
🗓 Victoria Mara Heilweil: Infinite runs until August 17, 2024 at Jonathan Carver Moore.
