Overview
SFMOMA’s Art of Noise exhibition features 800+ music related objects (concert posters, album covers, music devices, sound installations).
This is a MUST SEE show for music lovers, musicians, DJs, audiophiles, graphic/industrial design lovers.
Art of Noise Exhibition Preview. SFMOMA, San Francisco.
The posters in the exhibition (over 600!) are mind-blowing, spanning decades.
Notable works for me are the Factory Records-related posters (see my post on last year’s Pace collab regarding Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures) and the collection of rave and nightclub fliers, which remind me of the “weird” San Francisco I grew up with during the 1990s, the San Francisco I find myself homesick for.

*The interactive dynamic of this show is superb.
teenage engineering, a Swedish consumer electronics company founded by Jesper Kouthoofd, David Eriksson, Jens Rudberg, and David Möllerstedt, created an extraordinary mid-century-meets-the-future, exquisitely Jetson-esque listening lounge where you can experiment with mixing songs from artists like Missy Elliot and Lykke Li.
*See their ultra-cool drum machines and synthesizers, available for purchase on Amazon at the end of the post.
In Devon Turnbull’s HiFi Listening Room (Devon is THE master sound system creator known for his work in celebrity homes, luxury hotels, and the New York Supreme store), which features custom-built speakers and subs made from previously discontinued Japanese audio components by Fostex International, you can experience a LIVE DJ SET BY A VARIETY OF SELECTORS.
See the schedule HERE. I attended twice, and was such a different vibe each time! Both times were phenomenal. Seeing Mark Ronson DJ was beyond exciting.

Art of Noise also includes Yuri Suzuki’s Arborhythm, a sound sculpture located at the Howard Street entrance to the museum, near the museum’s latest installation by Kara Walker, which you can preview HERE.
“Suzuki has programmed the work to actively remix the natural and urban sounds of San Francisco into an ambient wellness soundtrack. Captured from around and beyond the city, more than a hundred field recordings—featuring foghorns and ocean waves, cable cars and sea lions—playfully connect us to our surroundings.”
