Overview
Today’s LOVE LETTER TO ART features Jonathan Carver Moore’s latest show BOLD by Aplerh-Doku Borlabi.
Doku is a Ghanaian artist and the first participant in JCM’s residency program. His practice involves meticulously shaping coconut bark fibers to create the varying skin tones characteristic of his work. The result is a wonderful array of textures and colors, reminiscent of paint but sourced from the coconut, a tribute to his Ghanaian heritage. There’s so much love in Doku’s work—the stoicism is undeniable and, IMO, just so beautiful.
“Incorporating eight pieces crafted during the gallery’s inaugural artist-in-residency program, these artworks blend the subjects Doku captured in Ghana with the distinct ‘characters’ he encountered during his residency in San Francisco…Both communities of people separated geographically by varying continents share this idea of coincidence, being unapologetically themselves whether through their sense of fashion, how they take up space, how they interact with one another, their mannerisms and so much more. Their ‘bold’ energy is a part of them, it makes them who they are.”
