ATTENTION JOY DIVISION FANS: You do not want to miss this chance to own a part of Joy Division history.
Pace Gallery has collaborated with designer Peter Saville and musician Stephen Morris (Joy Division/New Order) to create CP1919, a homage to Joy Division and their debut album released in 1979, Unknown Pleasures.
Saville’s design for the iconic album cover is based on CP1919, the first radio pulsar from outer space, which originates from the Vulpecula constellation, discovered in 1967 by Jocelyn Bell Burnell. The sounds of CP1919 inspired the project’s soundtrack by Morris. You can listen to the Jodrell Bank’s (University of Manchester Observatory and Astrophysics Center) sample of it and learn more about pulsars below.
Joy Division formed in 1976, whose members included Ian Curtis (vocals/lyrics/guitar), Bernard Sumner (guitar/keyboard), Peter Hook (bass), and Stephen Morris (drums). After Curtis’ suicide in 1980, the band recruited Morris’ girlfriend Gillian Gilbert (now wife), and re-formed as New Order.
*Starting on Monday, October 9 at 12 p.m. (Eastern Daylight Time) and ending on October 13, at 4 p.m., you will be able to purchase and bid on 2 versions of CP1919. A portion of the sale proceeds will be donated to CALM, a suicide-prevention non-profit, in memory of Ian Curtis.
1) CP1919: Sweeping Sun White 2023 will be $100 to purchase and will include an NFT (white design), audio component, and a limited edition t-shirt, which will be unique to each artwork. Pace Verso link to PURCHASE below.
2) THERE WILL ONLY BE ONE CP1919: Sweeping Sun Black 2023, which will not be released to the public. The work will be sold at auction, and includes an NFT (black design) and previously unreleased Joy Division “vocal fragments” in addition to newly recorded audio on a bespoke commemorative hard drive.
