Public Art: Christo Oropeza Mural at Fort Mason Center
Today’s art post focuses on Christo Oropeza’s 2-building mural, Aun así, pienso en ti (Yet, I think of you) at Fort Mason.
On my last visit to Fort Mason, Christo was still in the process of painting the mural with his assistant, Martin Malvar, so was exciting to see the finished work!
The mural was commissioned by Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture (FMCAC), and pays homage to the behind the scenes work historically and currently at Fort Mason, which was built in 1912. Christo’s inspiration for the work also circles back to themes of and family and Latino culture—AND himself being a part of the art world and its behind the scenes—as he is also co-founder of the Mission’s Incline Gallery, and part of SFMOMA.
The murals are painted on what used to be the fort’s railway loading docks, which are only a few feet away from the water, and are now buildings B and C. Amazing cause part of the train tracks are still there, which he pointed out to me. The former military site is now a hub of activity for the arts in San Francisco, as it is home to several art-centric businesses, in addition to hosting the annual FOG Design+Art and Art Market fairs.
The mural will be on view until mid-May 2023.
