Overview
MIDNIGHT MOVIE, featuring the work of Justin Yoon, is the latest show at San Francisco’s Jonathan Carver Moore.
Yoon is a Korean-American artist based in Brooklyn, who grew up in both LA and Budang, South Korea.
In his paintings you’ll see glittering gods and goddesses enjoying martinis at the movies. These characters “Blue Dream, Marge the Space Queen (Marge, for short), Fivepoundz (the Shih Tzu), and Machoman Park—gather in a dreamlike and somewhat deserted coastal city for the premier of the quintessential queer and Asian feature film of the 1970s, that came to be in their reality but not in ours.” In Yoon’s surrealist world, Asian queerness is celebrated historically—an ideal currently in the making—a goal we will hopefully see come into fruition.
His work exudes a Tom of Finland vibe, albeit softer and hyper-colorized. And to me, that is such a TERRIFIC, dreamy vibe. Yes, stirred not shaken and make it gin please. 
Jonathan Carver Moore’s openings include such a diverse group of individuals, which says a lot about the San Francisco art community. Artists, curators, museum players, collectors and editors are always in attendance, sending the message: If you build it, they will come. It’s clear that Jonathan is more than a purveyor of art—he represents the people restoring balance to the city. San Francisco is lucky to have him.
