The New Black Vanguard: Photography between Art and Fashion curated by art critic and Gagosian director, Antwaun Sargent and organized by the Aperture Foundation, features the work of 15 contemporary Black photographers, and is the FIRST AND ONLY WEST COAST installation of the show.
The photography in this show is phenomenal—and there is A LOT OF IT—over 100 works (including film) covering 2 floors. My overwhelm was a delightful guest that day, since it’s not very often that I get to see fashion-forward shows in San Francisco.
The fashion photography by Black artists in The New Black Vanguard says, Black representation is power—a very welcome message regarding what has historically been an industry of such low diversity.
The exhibition also includes 11 short films, which are on view in the museum’s Toni Rembe Freedom Theater located on the 2nd floor.
📖 The show’s accompanying book, The New Black Vanguard: Photography between Art and Fashion by Antwaun Sargent, is by the Aperture Foundation.
