Overview
The San Francisco Art Fair, formerly known as Art Market San Francisco, is the city’s longest running art fair, taking place annually at Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture. This year’s fair features 85 galleries from around the world and kicks off with it’s opening party on Thursday night, followed by 3 additional days of viewing and purchasing art.
Admission
Tickets to the event are available at 2 levels. Admission to the opening party + 3-day passis$65 and a DAILY pass is $35.
Programming
San Francisco Art Fair’s projects and events include presentations, talks, demonstrations, and performances given by a variety of art professionals, and are FREE to attend with admission.
A LOVE LETTER TO ART RECOMMENDS
Artist Talk Presented by KADIST: Michael Rakowitz | Friday, April 26, 2024, 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Erika Mei Chua Holum, Assistant Curator at Blaffer Art Museum at the University of Houston will be in conversation with artist Michael Rakowitz about his art making practice and his project at San Francisco Art Fair, Behemoth II. Rakowitz is an Iraqi-American artist working at the intersection of problem-solving and troublemaking. His work has appeared in venues worldwide including MoMA, MassMOCA, Palais de Tokyo, the 16th Biennale of Sydney, the 10th and 14th Istanbul Biennials, and National Design Triennial at the Cooper-Hewitt. He has had solo projects and exhibitions with Creative Time, Tate Modern in London, The Wellin Museum of Art, and MCA Chicago. Rakowitz is represented by Rhona Hoffman Gallery, Chicago; Jane Lombard Gallery, New York; and Barbara Wien Galerie, Berlin; Pi Artworks, Istanbul; and Green Art Gallery, Dubai. He lives and works in Chicago. After the presentation at San Francisco Art Fair, Michael Rakowitz’s Behemoth II will travel to Seattle Art Fair (July 25–28), followed by the exhibition Makeshift Memorials, Small Revolutions at the Blaffer Art Museum and KADIST San Francisco this fall. Aesthetic Technologies Presented by the Asian Art Museum: Asian and Asian American Art in the Digital Age | Sat, April 27, 2024. 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM
The Asian Art Museum has undergone a major transformation, renewing its commitment to contemporary Asian and Asian American art while developing fresh modes of interactive engagement with the historical artworks in its world-class collection. Join Director of Experience Garance Marneur and curators Padma Dorje Maitland and Cheng Xu for a conversation moderated by Writer/Editor Nick Stone exploring these new approaches and examining the artificial divide between contemporary and traditional storytelling in the museum experience. About the Speakers: AAM Director of Experience Design Garance Marneur’s wealth of experience includes 15 years in stage design, directing, and art and cultural production. She was named one of the top 10 Theatre Designer in the UK. Most recently, Garance worked with the Exploratorium to create an interactive video exhibition, and RUSH at Gray Area to create responsive digital art experiences utilizing real-time biometric data of dancers and the audience to guide the course of the performance. She served as artistic director for LEVYdance, in San Francisco where she curated artist residencies that promoted inclusivity and fostered artistic growth in underserved communities; and was co-director and experience designer at Racine de Trois, a theater group and winner of the ARTCENA prize in France. Imaging Reality Presented by Gray Area: Artificial Intelligence and the Future of the Picture | Saturday, April 27, 2024, 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Advances in artificial intelligence tools for image-making have left the realm of novelty and entered the everyday workflows of creators across industries. From creative software plug-ins to online text-to-image generators, the tech sector now offers tools to augment the human hand at every step of the artistic process. As a result, art is changing; and so are the thousands of images that we are exposed to every day. In this panel discussion at the San Francisco Art Fair, Gray Area invites speakers Yvonne Fang (artist and UI/UX designer), Miguel Novelo (artist), and Nicole Fitzgerald (Co-Founder, Alpaca) moderated by Hannah Scott (Research Manager, Gray Area) to consider how these new tools impact creative practice and visual culture. What makes new AI tools different from previous creative technologies? How are images changing, and why is it important? What role does the artist now play in the creative production process? Saint Joseph’s Arts Foundation presents Cult of Culture, an immersive experience designed to offer a peek into our layered world of art, beauty and performance. Founded in 2018 by Ken Fulk and located inside a painstakingly restored landmark church in SoMa, Saint Joe’s is a multi-disciplinary 501(c)(3) arts incubator dedicated to elevating the shared human experience through the cultivation of art and design, conversation and creativity. A curated selection of works by SJAF’s featured artists, including Kevin Sabo, Jennie Ottinger and Annie Duncan, offers a sampling from some of the Foundation’s recent exhibitions. The multi-layered installation of seating vignettes and decorative finishes represents the design of our neo-Romanesque interior, which offers cozy nooks for co-working, elaborate conversation pits and cafe seating amidst the exhibitions and performances.
