Black Place I | Happy 136th Birthday Georgia O’Keeffe! | Born on Nov 15

The Black Place is about 150 miles from Ghost Ranch and as you come to it over a hill, it looks like a mile of elephants—grey hills all about the same size of the almost white sand at their feet… Such a beautiful, untouched lonely-feeling place—part of what I call the Far Away.

—Geogia O’Keeffe

Today’s LOVE LETTER TO ART celebrates Georgia O’Keeffe’s 136th Birthday with Black Place I (featured in San Diego Museum of Art’s SPECTACULAR O’Keeffe and Moore exhibition from earlier this year).

It is such an extraordinary work, and she, like Mark Rothko, are artists whose works I make a point of seeing in person, as most Rothkos and O’Keefes photograph poorly. Their intensity somehow does not translate at all to film, which I suppose is the best motivator to see them IRL.

In case you missed it, here’s a snippet of the SDMA O’Keeffe and Moore show below.
