Overview
If you LOVE Keith Haring as much as I do, YOU NEED TO VISIT Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasy in LA’s Arts District like yesterday. For those unfamiliar with Luna Luna, it was an art amusement park in Hamburg, Germany during the summer of 1987, with rides and attractions designed by 1980s power artists, like Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
Luna Luna was created by Austrian artist, André Heller with a $500k grant he received from the German magazine Neue Revue. The original artists involved with the project were: Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Roy Lichtenstein, Salvador Dalí, David Hockney, Kenny Scharf, Sonia Delaunay, Joseph Beuys, Arik Brauer, Manfred Deix, Monika Gil’sing, André Heller, Rebecca Horn, Jim Whiting, Philip Glass, Daniel Spoerri, Hubert Aratym, Christian Ludwig Attersee, Georg Baselitz, Günter Brus, Hans Magnus Enzensberger, Erté, Gertie Fröhlich, Wolfgang Herzig, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, Jörg Immendorff, Hermann Nitsch, Peter Pongratz, Patrick Raynaud, Susanne Schmögner, August Walla, Jean Tinguely, and Roland Topor.
After 36 years, the contents of the amusement park were discovered in 44 sealed shipping containers stored in Texas. DreamCrew Entertainment, co-founded by Drake and Adel “Future” Nur, has collaborated with Live Nation to recreate these lost and found works of art by some of the most prolific artists of the 20th century.
Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasy includes Luna Luna artists: Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Roy Lichtenstein, Salvador Dalí, David Hockney, Kenny Scharf and Sonia Delaunay, Joseph Beuys, Arik Brauer, Manfred Deix, Monika Gil’sing, André Heller, Rebecca Horn, Jim Whiting, Philip Glass, and Daniel Spoerri.
Due to the fragility and historical significance of the works, they are displayed exhibition-style rather than as an “amusement park”. Three of the works in the show, the Dalídom (Salvador Dalí), Enchanted Tree (David Hockney), and Dream Station Wedding Chapel (André Heller) are interactive experiences, and are included in the Moon Pass tickets ($65–$85).

TIP: *VINTAGE LOVERS, ART COLLECTORS!!! Don’t forget to check out Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasy’s gift shop, as there are several vintage and archival items discovered in the original Luna Luna shipping containers for sale in the gift shop and online.
🗓 Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasy LA runs until May 12, 2024. Tickets are $30–$85.
