Exhibition Details

Treasures of the Pharaohs makes its U.S. debut at the de Young Museum, bringing together 130 extraordinary royal treasures and rare antiquities spanning 3,000 years of ancient Egyptian history. From monumental statues and exquisite gold jewelry to objects from the recently rediscovered Golden City of Amenhotep III—many shown in North America for the first time—the exhibition explores the lives of the pharaohs, the people who served them, religious beliefs, daily life, and the elaborate rituals surrounding the afterlife. Curated by renowned Egyptologists Dr. Tarek El Awady and Renée Dreyfus—also the curator of the wonderful The Etruscans: From the Heart of Ancient Italy, currently on view at the Legion of Honor, and organizer of the de Young’s famed 1979 Treasures of Tutankhamun exhibition (which I attended as a baby!)—this landmark exhibition offers a rare opportunity to experience one of history’s most influential civilizations through some of its most remarkable surviving works.
