McEvoy Foundation for the Arts’ latest exhibition, Rituals of Devotion, curated by Amanda Nudelman, features the works of Marina Abramović, Mamma Andersson, Mary Carlson, Jordan Ann Craig,Tacita Dean, William Eggleston, Mary Frey, Lee Friedlander, Nan Goldin, Liz Hernández, Sky Hopinka, Baseera Khan, Karla Knight, Zoe Leonard, Robert Mapplethorpe, Zanele Muholi, Edvard Munch, Portia Munson, Sahana Ramakrishnan, Dario Robleto, Ursula Schulz-Dornburg, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Mark Todd, Suzanne Treister, and Esther Pearl Watson.
This is a show in which passion is expressed beautifully and uniquely in each work. Well done. There were so many wonderful pieces in this collection. All the ceramics were incredible. Patti Smith by Mapplethorpe is always striking, but that purple tinted mirror is mesmeric genius. Record Store from Outer Space (end of video below) by Esther Pearl Watson and Mark Todd was really fun. I enjoyed its interactive components immensely. And the Marina. I wasn’t able to reach the top of the rose quartz installation, but I did feel an instant sense of calm once my cheek was in place on its lower portion. Loved it.
Ritutals of Devotion runs until May 27, 2023.
Since opening in 2017, McEvoy Foundation for the Arts (McEvoy Family Collection) has hosted a number of excellent shows, performances, and events. Notable exhibitions include Next to You (2021), “an exhibition of artworks from the McEvoy Family Collection that celebrates the joy, vitality, and healing power of the performing arts” and Michael Jang’s California (2019-2020), a retrospective on Jang’s fifty-year photography career.
McEvoy Foundation for the Arts is located at 1150 25th Street, Building B (down the block from Minnesota Street Project, across the street and past the Minnesota Grove garden, a 6-min walk from the TBUS Chinatown stop at 3rd and 23rd streets). The foundation recently announced its fall 2023 closure, so you’ll want to make sure to catch their last show, What are words worth?, opening on June 16, 2023.
